Doggie Dental Care

We all know its important for us to take care of our teeth.  Most of us brush, floss, and go to the dentist at least somewhat regularly. But what are you doing for your dog’s dental health? Canine dental health is important and here are some tips.

First check your pooches mouth. Do the sniff test, bad breathe is normal but terrible breathe should be addressed with your vet. It could mean halitosis or infection. While in there look for swollen gums, sores and visible tooth decay. All of these issues affect your dogs health and should be taken care of by your vet.

Next, invest in a dog tooth brush. You should be brushing your dogs teeth at least weekly. This will help prevent gum disease, cavities, and other oral infections.

Finally, consult your vet for information on professional teeth cleanings, gum scrappings and other ways to prevent dental issues. Your dogs teeth affect it’s health. It is good for you and your pet to take care of these potential issues.

A Cat plays Squirrel and saves its own Life

Recently in Boston, a lovely white house cat named Sugar moved to a new apartment with her owners. This new apartment was on the 19th floor and had a lovely veranda.

While out on the veranda Sugar slipped and fell all 19 floors to the ground below. Her owners were horrified, but found sugar fine on the sidewalk below. She was a little shaken but she was grooming herself and had no injuries.

Sugars vet explained that she as able to survive the fall by spreading her legs like a flying squirrel and catching the wind. This softened her fall and saved her from injury.

If You Change Vets, Take Your Dog's Records with You

Your relationship with your vet is as important as your relationship with your dog. If you love your dog, you should love your vet. Should you change vets, make sure you either take your dogs medical records with you or have them directly sent to the new vet.

Those records are legally yours, and not legally the property of the former vet. Just as it is for human patients, canine patients' diagnoses depend upon a knowledge of medical history.

Too Many Treats Can Create a Food Hog of a Dog

Good dog, you sat down, now eat a treat! Good dog, you stopped barking, here, have a treat. Good dog, you came when I called you, how about a treat? Good dog, you went outside to pee, time for your treat. Good dog, you ate all your dinner, now eat a little more...

You get the point. By rewarding your dog with food for normal, socialized behavior, you create a bored little food hog. Whatever happened to just "good dog?" Dogs really love praise and they'll do almost anything to feel they have succeeded in being part of the program. Spare the treats and save the dog from becoming overweight.
